The Bays has always been Murray's home, and he attended Glendowie College, before heading away on his OE to Europe. He is an active member of the Remuera Golf Club and a member of Auckland University’s Gallagher Shield-winning rugby team in 1987 - spending a year playing professional rugby with the Italian club Messina.
